Claude skills for small business: what they do and how to start

A plain-English look at how small teams can use Claude skills for everyday work, from customer replies to a company brain, and what to check before you rely on one.

What is a Claude skill?

A skill is a folder of instructions, and sometimes templates or reference files, that Claude loads when a task calls for it. Instead of re-explaining your process in every chat, you give Claude the steps once and it follows them each time. On claude.ai you upload a skill as a zip file; in Claude Code a skill is a folder in your project.

Jobs small teams hand to Claude skills

The best fits are repeat jobs with clear rules and a human check at the end. These are the jobs our own kits cover:

  • Replying to new leads. A friendly first reply plus the questions you need answered before quoting.
  • Quotes and proposals. Turning job notes into a clear quote, using only the rates and terms you supply.
  • Scheduling messages. Confirmations, reschedules, cancellations and reminders that follow your policy.
  • Customer replies. Calm, accurate answers to everyday questions and messy threads.
  • Invoice follow-up. Polite, firm payment reminders that don't invent fees.
  • A company brain. Answers from your own docs, meeting recaps, lead briefs and a decision log, with the source file cited.

What to look for in a Claude skill for your business

  • Drafts, not actions. For anything customer-facing, you should see and approve the message before it goes out.
  • Your facts only. Good skills use your price list and policies, and mark a gap instead of guessing.
  • Clear limits. Skills for general business work should stay out of legal, tax, medical and financial advice.
  • Tested examples. Sample requests with expected results let you check the skill before you rely on it.
